Introduction to Geophysical Exploration
This website was developed in the late 1990s with support from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. The website is a self-contained introductory course in geophysics. Each section (Gravity, Magnetism, Resistivity, Refraction Seismology) contains a notes section that functions as the textbook for the class and a case-based set of exercises that illustrates the use of each geophysical technique. Dr. Pamela Burnley at the University of Nevada Las Vegas acquired the materials and has been maintaining the site ever since. Over time this has required a certain amount of recoding, especially for the applets. Updating is still in progress.
The Case: Imagine that we are approached by a housing developer in Golden Colorado interested in identifying the possible extent of a hazard underlying a planned development. She explains that at the turn-of-the-century extensive subsurface coal mining was conducted in and around an area undergoing a recent housing boom. Some of these mines ventured close enough to the surface that in 1896 a mine shaft was flooded, killing a dozen miners after it collapsed under a nearby stream. She asks for our advice concerning the possibility of using geophysical methods to detect the existence underground tunnels and voids beneath the development site. After asking questions regarding the specifics of the area and the developer's needs and expectations, it becomes clear to us that a gravity survey might be the most cost-effective technique for providing the information required to continue the project safely. She invites us to prepare and submit a formal bid on the project.
Each section of the course takes the student through the process of evaluating whether or not each geophysical technique will work for answering questions about the subsurface (e.g. presence of tunnels, depth to water table) in the same hypothetical housing development. Each section then guides the student through determining how to set up a survey and how to analyze the resulting data.
